few hours of pre-meeting activity didn't start until almost 10pm last
night, as my main task for the day got interrupted a few times

configure changes (thanks Cheyennen for the quick update!)

removes unused code) that I wanted to look at ... but the first one is
removing some stuff that was brought in as dependencies of other work
still pending review in gerrit.  So the right thing to do is not
entirely clear.

changes to get a sense for whether they are salvageable/likely to
actually land, to determine whether or not to go ahead with removing
the stuff in 14547

(offhand) if there's other stuff that's pressing
