[15:59:23] cwills joins the room
[15:59:26] <yadayada> Hello
[15:59:36] <cwills> Hello
[15:59:42] <meffie> greetings yadav, how are you?\
[15:59:49] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> greetings
[16:00:16] <yadayada> I am fine Thanks Mike
[16:01:18] wiesand joins the room
[16:01:35] <wiesand> Good evening
[16:02:08] <meffie> big storm coming in. need to lower my doors...
[16:02:32] <wiesand> Ouch. Good luck!
[16:02:55] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> Probably not as big as Laura, but good luck nonetheless
[16:03:23] <wiesand> Though as usual I'm dumb and have no idea what "lowering the doors" means...
[16:03:32] <meffie> hello wiesand and kaduk
[16:04:06] <meffie> i have moved my office to the auto garage and have the doors open in the summer.
[16:04:17] <cwills> master and 1.8.x clean builds with latest pull from Linux 5.9 repo
[16:04:32] <meffie> horaay
[16:05:31] <wiesand> Yes I merged the 5.9 change yesterday in the hope to get a clean nightly linux-rc build. Alas, it seems there wer no such builds last night?
[16:07:22] <wiesand> Ah, nevermind. Just found the mails.
[16:07:29] <meffie> if not, it is possible to trigger a build from the web inter.. ok
[16:08:52] <wiesand> I also merged a few other changes slated for 1.8.7 (generally with less review than Andrew would like to happen before I merge, to make some progress at all).
[16:09:45] <meffie> sorry, we had lots and lots of zoom meetings this week.
[16:09:54] <wiesand> And pulled up a few new ones, working through the wish list. It's still the low hanigng fruit, but I think we are homing in on 1.8.7pre1.
[16:10:03] <yadayada> for 14312 almost all review comments are addressed, so I think it is also reasy for 1.8.7
[16:10:06] <meffie> gerrit reviews would have been much more fun ;)
[16:10:37] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> Thanks for the reminder yadayada, let me go push the button on that
one!
[16:10:48] <yadayada> Thanks Ben
[16:10:54] <wiesand> 14312 is on my wishlist too of course.
[16:11:36] <wiesand> (Our zoom meetings are getting better as we keep learning how to get the most out of them)
[16:13:30] <wiesand> So, re the stable series there is progress and a plan how to continue.
[16:13:33] <meffie> thanks ben and yadav for the work on 14312
[16:13:48] <wiesand> Any additions to the 1.8.7pre1 wish list?
[16:14:30] <meffie> i just pushed 14330 and 14329. they may be nice for 1.8.7
[16:15:20] <wiesand> I'll have a look
[16:15:51] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> (currently for master, of course)
[16:15:58] <meffie> i found this problem this morning. someone copied the KeyFile/KeyFileExt and they had permissions 644. the bosserver ignores the KeyFileExt
[16:16:06] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> But they seem appropriate for 1.8.x based on the summary
[16:16:11] <meffie> thanks.
[16:17:07] <wiesand> In the comments on one of the changes merged recently, you mentioned 14294 and 14295 and Andrew asked whether we could have them in 1.8.x. Would that make sense?
[16:18:58] <meffie> looking..
[16:19:10] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> c-tap-harness update
[16:19:57] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> Is that just to be happier with the newest compilers?
[16:20:00] <meffie> ah, it would be very very nice to have the c-tap-harness update in 1.8.x. that would make the buildbot much simplier.
[16:20:09] <meffie> simpler
[16:20:39] <wiesand> To my understanding they are about getting more detialed error messages in case of buildbot failures?
[16:20:46] <meffie> the motivation was to pull up to a modern version that has the "verbose" option.
[16:20:57] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> Ah, right.
[16:21:03] <cwills> Not sure if 14305 might make sense (just documenting minimum kernel and build-tool requirements)
[16:21:04] <meffie> yes, currently we dont see which tests fail.
[16:21:05] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> That does seem useful; thanks for the reminder.
[16:21:29] <wiesand> ok, earmarked
[16:21:44] <meffie> i have been trying to work around this in the buildbot by running each test with -o. but it is ugly.
[16:22:32] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> ugly and unmaintainable, too, for good measure?
[16:23:21] <meffie> yes. :)
[16:24:00] <meffie> also there's a load of other fixes, and such, added over the years by russ and others.
[16:24:32] <wiesand> 14305 certainly makes sense IMO - pulling it up may be not quite straightforward though - I think there was some reshuffling of text file content
[16:24:53] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> 14305 is merged to master, as of 20 seconds ago
[16:25:22] <wiesand> but most people reading INSTALL at all will probably do it from a stable release tarball
[16:25:31] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> exactly
[16:25:48] <cwills> might be helpful to distro maintainers though
[16:27:34] <wiesand> Speaking of text files, I recently pushed 14320 and would like to know how folks feel about that. If you think we should leave that PC stuff alone, fine.
[16:28:15] <meffie> i agree with your changes.
[16:28:52] <meffie> thank you.
[16:29:07] <cwills> looks fine
[16:29:52] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> It seems like a fine thing to do; I have just been swamped this week
and haven't processed that chunk of email yet.
[16:32:02] <meffie> i wonder if the openafs foundation board should chime in? i would expect them to agree.
[16:33:14] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> I don't think they are the formal authority for the repo contents,
though I guess it would be useful to know if they have a stance.
[16:33:50] <cwills> 14305 just pushed to 1.8.x
[16:34:04] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> Was it a clean cherry-pick?
[16:34:08] <cwills> yes
[16:34:13] <wiesand> thanks
[16:34:33] <wiesand> (I like it when I'm wrong about those things)
[16:35:33] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> When you are sufficiently pessimistic, all surprises are good
surprises
[16:35:44] <meffie> heh!
[16:38:22] <wiesand> Ok, pullup of 14305 will make 1.8.7pre1.
[16:38:33] <wiesand> I think that's what I have for today.
[16:38:50] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> Mike, can you refresh my memory on the 'make-rpm' target?  ISTR there
was some build-scripts changes that were going to be rethinked, but
that stack was more than just the two changes I currently see for
'make-rpm'.
[16:38:59] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> s/target/topic/, need more coffee
[16:40:17] <meffie> yes, i have vastly simplified the approach (less changes). just 2 commits are open now.
[16:41:06] <meffie> both have +1 from andrew, but with some wording suggestions to a commit message, which i can change if you have any other changes.
[16:41:10] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> Okay, cool.
(Today is a company holiday as a "wellness day", and while I do have a
few other things to do, I should be spending some quality time with
gerrit.)
[16:42:46] <meffie> the new stack does not rewrite make-release :) just some changes to makesrpm.pl and a new toplevel make file target that runs rpmbuild directly.
[16:43:14] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> So I don't think I have specific topics for master for today; I did
get to merge a couple things last night/this morning, though.
[16:43:36] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> Got it; it is on my list to look at.
[16:44:36] <meffie> thank you.
[16:45:15] <cwills> as I mentioned earlier.. everything still looks clean on the latest linux 5.9 code (as well as gcc-10/clang-10)
[16:45:38] <meffie> nice.
[16:46:04] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> (tangentially related, apparently FreeBSD merged clang 10 without
thinking very hard about the -fcommon thing, and there was a bunch of
fallout for the packaged third-party software...)
[16:47:06] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> other topics for today?
[16:47:16] <yadayada> nothing from my side
[16:47:17] <meffie> ben, do you have any idea when we will have a 1.9.0 tag?
[16:47:42] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> No firm ETA for a 1.9.0 tag but this weekend is fairly plausible
[16:48:00] <meffie> wow! that's great news!
[16:48:09] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> I don't think there are any pressing crises in the house or yard that
will distract me...
[16:48:37] <meffie> fingers crossed, knocking on wood
[16:49:13] <meffie> thanks that's all i have.
[16:49:34] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> It is a good question!
[16:51:51] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> Anyway ... motion to adjourn?
[16:52:02] <wiesand> Sustained.
[16:52:24] <wiesand> Thanks a lot everyone. And please review review…
[16:52:24] <meffie> have a good weekend.
[16:52:34] <cwills> have a good weekend everyone
[16:52:34] <yadayada> thanks
[16:53:00] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> Have a good weekend, and thanks everyone
[16:53:21] <wiesand> Stay safe, please. Goodbye.
