[13:57:18] meffie joins the room
[13:57:35] <meffie> good morning
[13:58:21] wiesand joins the room
[13:58:39] <wiesand> good morning
[14:03:22] <wiesand> looks like this one will be brief...
[14:03:34] <meffie> ok
[14:03:45] <meffie> less notes to write :)
[14:04:04] <wiesand> I'm happy to report that I'm catching up with my homework
[14:04:25] <wiesand> Not quite there yet, though
[14:04:31] <meffie> hooray!
[14:05:05] <wiesand> I'll continue with it after the meeting until I fall asleep
[14:05:32] <wiesand> (which is early these days though ;-)
[14:05:40] <meffie> me too :)
[14:07:14] <meffie> for the notes, should i say we are preparing the 1.6.24pre1 release?
[14:07:31] <wiesand> may I ask you to have a quick look at https://gerrit.openafs.org/#/q/status:open+project:openafs+branch:openafs-stable-1_8_x ?
[14:07:53] <wiesand> and tell me whether you see anything not meant to go into 1.8.3?
[14:08:07] <meffie> ok.
[14:08:43] <wiesand> re notes: yes, that one and 1.8.3pre1
[14:08:49] <meffie> ok.
[14:10:14] <wiesand> my next step will be to find out which of the open 1.8.x changes need to be rebased, then do that
[14:10:23] <wiesand> then start pulling up things merged on master
[14:10:26] <meffie> i assumed all the ones on the 1.8.x branch were going to be included in 1.8.3, not sure why
[14:11:11] <meffie> (i mean all the ones with +1)
[14:11:47] <wiesand> yes I agree, it just has been a while…
[14:11:54] <wiesand> thanks
[14:12:16] <meffie> ok, i'll take some time too look at that list again to be sure.
[14:13:29] <meffie> it would be good to have 13400 included in 1.8.3 too, since that bug is a real hassle.
[14:13:45] <wiesand> for 1.6.24, I'd like to stick with what was merged before 1.6.23, + Mark's Linux 4.20 fixes
[14:14:01] <meffie> yes that sounds good.
[14:14:45] <wiesand> and that's about all from my side today
[14:15:11] <wiesand> at least it was a little bit more than lately ;-)
[14:15:23] <meffie> ok, thank you
[14:15:58] <wiesand> I noticed a new contributor in gerrit
[14:16:43] <meffie> yes! cheyenne wills is a new person at SNA. he is located in the U.S.
[14:17:08] <wiesand> he's most welcome!
[14:17:44] <meffie> he was tracking down a weird error when installing / removing the DKMS package and alright has a contributed fix candidate
[14:18:29] <wiesand> 13404… hevn't had a look yet
[14:18:30] <meffie> now he has started reviewing code changes, but it will take time to learn openafs.
[14:18:51] <wiesand> of course
[14:20:10] <meffie> also, i'm hoping he will help me improve our wik.openafs.org content, as he finds all the old and messing info :)
[14:20:35] <wiesand> that's what newcomers are best for
[14:21:05] <meffie> yes, i just have learned to ignore the missing / out of date stuff
[14:22:25] <wiesand> anything else to dicuss today?
[14:22:38] <meffie> did i mention buildbot?
[14:22:47] <wiesand> not here…
[14:24:05] <meffie> ok, progress still being made on the new version, but it is taking a lot of time (sadly). the linux rc and daily builders seems to be working now, but the email messages still need some work.
[14:24:23] <meffie> the linux builders are now also running smoke tests again
[14:24:35] <meffie> i
[14:24:36] <wiesand> great
[14:25:06] <meffie> i will send an update to a mail list.
[14:25:35] <wiesand> thanks again for your efforts
[14:26:14] <meffie> no worries, i really like working on the buildbot. it's just slow going because the linux builds take some time.
[14:26:50] <meffie> cheyenne may be in a position to help maintain the buildbot too, in case i get hit by a snow plow.
[14:27:14] <wiesand> it's those configure tests that make the linux builds slow
[14:27:40] <wiesand> now that we do parallel builds, they probably dominate everything
[14:27:44] <meffie> yes, also, the linux install and reboot takes some time.
[14:28:00] <wiesand> ah, ok
[14:28:23] <meffie> those builders download linux ppa's for the daily / rc snapshots and install them and reboot.
[14:28:42] <wiesand> yes, now i remember
[14:29:24] <meffie> but yes, the configure tests dominate the build. and i cant cache the configure results because we want to rerun them on the new linux.
[14:30:37] <wiesand> sure
[14:30:59] <wiesand> if those could just be parallelized
[14:31:52] <meffie> yeah, they are mostly independent, maybe they could be parallelized somehow.
[14:32:05] <meffie> oh, i just had an idea.
[14:32:14] <wiesand> mostly, yes
[14:32:21] <wiesand> a brilliant one?
[14:33:07] <meffie> brilliant or really dumb.  i'll look at how to parallelize, but i'll have to run it by others.
[14:34:10] <meffie> i was just thinking, maybe some pre tests could be done in parallel *before* we configure, but save those to the configure cache, so when configure runs it gets the results really fast.
[14:34:33] <meffie> and we would not need to change our configure at all.
[14:35:37] <meffie> just an idea to research
[14:35:49] <wiesand> interesting idea
[14:37:08] <meffie> ok, i'll research this weekend :)
[14:37:25] <wiesand> but i'll give my homework priority
[14:38:38] <wiesand> Shall we call it a meeting?
[14:38:54] <meffie> yes, thank you stephan. have a good evening.
[14:39:02] <wiesand> Thanks a lot Mike!
