[13:15:42] <meffie> good morning
[13:17:25] <wiesand> good thing we have that freenode channel though
[13:17:37] mvita joins the room
[13:17:52] <mvita> present
[13:18:01] <meffie> i like the transcript here, and i like jabber more than irc, but i feel irc would be easier for other people to join :)
[13:18:37] <meffie> just dont make me use slack :)
[13:19:20] <meffie> hepix report: i believe the release team and foundation reports were very well received.
[13:19:35] <wiesand> no questions though...
[13:20:04] <meffie> mostly much happy surprise that openafs is progresssing.
[13:20:17] <wiesand> good
[13:20:23] <meffie> most people were genuinely supportive and happy
[13:20:34] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> That's exciting!
[13:20:59] <meffie> but were very sad since cern has announced afs is deprecated at cern, and so many sites have followed them.
[13:21:44] <meffie> many admins were happy to continue to use openafs and were happy to see the project continues, even though it's usage is declining.
[13:23:46] <meffie> my recommendation is to return to hepix 2019 (march of 2019 in san diego) with a progress update. there is also a hepix 2018 in oct in Barcelona
[13:24:00] <wiesand> how were Jeffrey's talks received? (I missed those - fell asleep)
[13:24:53] <meffie> i think they were received well too. they were running short on time, and some of his talks were shorter than the alloted time.
[13:25:17] <meffie> there were no questions for his talks if i recall.
[13:25:38] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> (BTW, about the outage:)
Core services were interrupted due to a firewall hardware
crash at the OC11 data center at approximately 8:40am. IS&T network
engineers failed over to redundant hardware at approximately 9:10am. All
core services have been restored. We apologize for the inconvenience.
[13:25:57] <meffie> ah, no problem. thanks.
[13:26:14] <wiesand> these things just happen
[13:26:23] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> yeah
[13:28:09] <meffie> also, i had some really nice chat's with wiesand's colleagues and pat reihecky from fermi.
[13:28:35] <wiesand> Ah, good!
[13:29:16] <meffie> pat was especially helpful and had some good suggestions
[13:29:39] <wiesand> he's very resourceful
[13:30:57] <wiesand> It occurred to me that the "container era" will be yet another problem for openafs.
[13:30:58] <meffie> yes, he showed me how to use the clang static analyzer, he has been using it against openafs master branch. i've started a setup to run it nightly on buildbot.openafs.org and show a report. loads of issues are shown, some trivial, some not.
[13:31:20] <mvita> nice
[13:31:38] <mvita> I was running clang yesterday - doing OS X builds
[13:31:44] <kaduk@jabber.openafs.org/barnowl> Cool, that's been on my todo list for years
[13:32:43] <meffie> sneak preview: https://buildbot.openafs.org/builders/scan-build
[13:34:12] <meffie> pat said he'd be willing to help review and work on the rpm spec file stuff too, since he is maintaining things for SL
[13:34:53] <mvita> sorry, who is Pat?
[13:35:10] <wiesand> he's one of the Scientific Linux developers at FNAL
[13:35:49] <wiesand> and the one I'm communicating with when providing new openafs SRPMs for SL
[13:36:07] <mvita> ah, thank you.
[13:36:14] <wiesand> and the one who came up with the black magic to generate per-kmod debuginfo packages
[13:37:29] <wiesand> it's interesting that there's stil interest in openafs now that the fnal.gov cell is history
[13:38:05] <meffie> i think he is not running it, but is just wanting to help with the packaging and perhaps the project
[13:38:32] <meffie> and to make sure it is supported as part of SL
[13:39:35] <wiesand> we still use transarc paths (and make dest ;-) - I'm thinking about changing this with 1.8
