[14:00:44] <wiesand> Hello
[14:01:44] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowlD10ED525> Can I talk today?
[14:01:53] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowlD10ED525> Woo, no jabber error
[14:01:57] <wiesand> Looks like you can
[14:02:06] <mvita> hi
[14:02:16] <mvita> we are not expecting meffie today
[14:02:27] <mvita> and I cannot stay long
[14:02:28] <wiesand> well-deserved vacation?
[14:02:43] <mvita> yes
[14:02:57] <wiesand> Ok, I’m busy with other stuff too, se let’s make it a brief one.
[14:03:04] <wiesand> Any news on Linux 4.5?
[14:03:14] <mvita> 4.5?
[14:03:19] <wiesand> 4.6
[14:03:54] <mvita> sorry, context switch is killing me…. refresh my memory on the issue?
[14:03:54] <wiesand> er, 4.8
[14:03:59] <mvita> ahhh
[14:04:05] <wiesand> "time"
[14:04:25] <mvita> jhg tested w/ 4.8 and found no issues on build or operation (iirc)
[14:04:41] <mvita> the time stuff I was referring to apparently was not merged yet
[14:04:51] <wiesand> Ah, Good.
[14:04:54] <wiesand> Thanks.
[14:05:04] <wiesand> Anything else to discuss? ;-)
[14:05:11] <mvita> but I've now learned to not put too much weight to what I read on linux-fsdevel
[14:05:21] <Jeffrey Altman> the new time apis have been applied to mainline and commits are being applied across the linux tree to remove references to the old apis before the old apis are removed
[14:05:31] <mvita> I'm now tracking linux-next and building against that
[14:06:05] <wiesand> Jeff: Thanks! Is removal of the old apis expected to happen before 4.8GA?
[14:06:25] <mvita> and have encountered build issues for which I or joe will be submitting patches soon
[14:06:34] <mvita> (that would be for 4.9)
[14:07:49] <wiesand> ok
[14:08:52] <mvita> sorry, boss NMI
[14:09:05] <mvita> back now
[14:09:50] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowlD10ED525> Derek got the fedora20 builder up again, so it looks like buildbot is
commenting in gerrit.
[14:10:06] <mvita> cool
[14:10:50] <mvita> I believe we are getting closer to providing a few new builders
[14:12:21] <wiesand> Having buildbot operational will help with 1.6.19pre1..
[14:13:53] <wiesand> Anything else to discuss today? Ben?
[14:14:00] <mvita> mike and caitlyn have cleaned up a few issues in make check and we are now using that on SNA build farm for smoke testing
[14:14:17] <mvita> fixes have been submitted upstream
[14:14:36] <wiesand> upstream?
[14:14:47] <mvita> gerrit
[14:14:59] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowlD10ED525> I didn't make any particular profress reviewing 1.8 candidates, but do
seem to be more back in the swing of things.
[14:15:13] <wiesand> Hope you’re better?
[14:15:26] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowlD10ED525> I tseem to be, thanks
[14:15:29] <mvita> glad you are on the mend
[14:15:45] <mvita> faster… higher…. stronger
[14:17:19] <wiesand> I think 1.6.19pre1 should wait until it’s clear whether changes are required with Linux 4.8.
[14:17:40] <mvita> I'm pretty sure there are not.
[14:18:11] <wiesand> Not yet. But see Jeff’s remark, and my question in response to it.
[14:18:38] <mvita> yes, that's for next (4.9)
[14:19:16] <wiesand> ah
[14:19:19] <mvita> jeffrey is correct, the new apis are present in 4.8 but the old ones have not yet been completely removed
[14:19:57] <mvita> some were targeted for removal in 4.8 but never got merged to 4.8
[14:20:01] <wiesand> and you;’re sure that removal will happen *after* the 4.8 release?
[14:20:42] <mvita> I don't know.
[14:21:07] <mvita> but I think it is customary for the rcx releases to only have bug fixes, not "new" merges
[14:21:14] <wiesand> That’s what I meant with "wait until it’s clear"
[14:22:21] <wiesand> And anyway, I won’t have time to work on 1.6.19 for another week at least :-(
[14:23:47] <mvita> my build env now allows me to test builds against any linux-next daily drop, or against any release or release candidate that is tagged in LInus' tree
[14:24:06] <mvita> so I pick up release candidates before they hit linux-stable as well
[14:24:48] <wiesand> Sounds good, thanks for your effort.
[14:25:02] <wiesand> After rc5 we’re probably safe. Due Sunday.
[14:25:05] <mvita> we are provisioning a machine to do this in our buildfarm - the process is currently manual
[14:25:57] <mvita> and I hope to get approval to provide a "linux-next" builder to openafs.org as well
[14:26:28] <wiesand> Sounds nice.
[14:27:08] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowlD10ED525> Indeed
[14:27:49] <mvita> oh, one last thing…
[14:28:35] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowlD10ED525> Yes, Columbo? ;)
[14:28:46] <mvita> were you all discussing guidelines for which things should be posted to release-team or opepnafs-devel last time?
[14:29:20] <mvita> if so, what was decided?
[14:29:52] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowlD10ED525> I don't really have the sense that there was a solid decision.
[14:30:00] <mvita> okay
[14:30:09] <wiesand> My personal conclusion would be ""in doubt, post to -devel".
[14:30:13] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowlD10ED525> Personally, I would be happy to see more things on -devel to improve
engagement with the developer community.
[14:30:35] <wiesand> +1
[14:30:41] <wiesand> (or what’s left of it)
[14:30:44] <mvita> okay,
[14:31:28] <wiesand> I think release-team use should be limited to things related to the release process.
[14:31:54] <Jeffrey Altman> agreed
[14:32:40] <wiesand> Shall we call that a "solid decision" now?
[14:32:51] <mvita> d'accord
[14:33:21] <Jeffrey Altman> that was the intention.   release-team is a select subset of the developer community and is intended only for those that are involved in the release process.   release-team was never intended as a place to hold discussions about code; only process.
[14:35:10] <wiesand> Fine, I think we agree on this.
[14:35:22] <wiesand> Another "one more thing (TM)" ?
[14:35:28] <mvita> that's all I've got
[14:36:00] <wiesand> Thanks a lot for participating today.
[14:36:12] <mvita> and I thank you all as well.
[14:36:28] <wiesand> cu next week
