[14:02:26] <wiesand> hi
[14:04:39] <meffie> hello wiesand
[14:05:04] <wiesand> i’m not alone :)
[14:06:20] <mvita> YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE
[14:06:41] <wiesand> Great.
[14:06:53] <wiesand> So, any news on the linux client front?
[14:06:56] <mvita> (sorry, an old American telethon reference)
[14:07:20] <wiesand> telethon?
[14:07:59] <mvita> televised marathon (40 hrs or more) charity fund raiser
[14:08:20] <wiesand> Ah, found it. My new vocabulary for today :)
[14:08:30] <meffie> heh
[14:08:54] <meffie> just reviewing the linux45 patches from ben so far.
[14:08:55] <wiesand> So, I take it there are no linux news.
[14:09:09] <wiesand> Ah, good. I’m not quite sure what the status is.
[14:09:12] <mvita> We have our Top Man working on it
[14:09:17] <meffie> topic:linux45 in gerrit
[14:13:36] <meffie> wiesand, do you want me to look for bug fix candidates that are already merged on the master branch for backporting to 1.6.x?
[14:13:57] <meffie> i'm not sure if there are any, but i could spend some time to search.
[14:14:55] <wiesand> I think it depends on what the strategy for 1.6 is at this point.
[14:15:31] <wiesand> Is it time to freeze it, except for high impact fixes?
[14:15:40] <meffie> i assume we want it to continue to be a maintenance branch
[14:15:57] <meffie> i would not say it is time to freeze it yet
[14:16:12] <wiesand> Resources may be better spent on getting 1.8 done.
[14:16:28] <wiesand> But I’m not sure. It’s a genuine question.
[14:17:29] <mvita> I don't think we should freeze 1.6 until 1.8 has a few genuinely stable releases
[14:17:34] <meffie> my impression is we would focus on fixes, and avoid back porting any structural changes
[14:17:40] <mvita> 1.4 and 1.6 ran in parallel for a long time
[14:17:48] <mvita> granted, that was not ideal
[14:18:04] <mvita> and it was because the first few 1.6 releases were stinkers
[14:18:27] <wiesand> I wouldn’t be that harsh, but... yes
[14:19:01] <wiesand> I’m afraid 1.8 will take some effort to get to production quality too
[14:19:36] <mvita> we definitely need to allow for that possibility in our planning
[14:20:51] <wiesand> So, no change in strategy yet.
[14:21:27] <wiesand> I think we haven’t backported "structural changes"
[14:22:05] <wiesand> Oh, I’d like to have a few of them just to reduce the skew
[14:22:14] <wiesand> But it’s not realistic
[14:22:16] <mvita> no change yet, but we should work on a plan for when and how the change would take place in the future
[14:22:40] <mvita> yes, skew is a problem sometimes
[14:22:40] <meffie> yes, i'd avoid any changes to reduce the skew, imho.
[14:25:19] <wiesand> Probably.
[14:26:28] <wiesand> What about thinks like you minor-cleanups... topic?
[14:26:39] <wiesand> things
[14:28:00] <meffie> i expected those were for 1.8.x
[14:28:16] <wiesand> ok
[14:29:30] <wiesand> I think there’s nothing else regarding 1.6 right now.
[14:29:48] <meffie> i wish gerrit had a way to indicate which branch changes are targeted for.
[14:31:26] <wiesand> I haven’t looked much at master last week.
[14:31:38] <wiesand> 11793 still seems to need that rebase
[14:31:49] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl93AC7D46> We could probably slow down the pace of 1.6 releases, though...modulo
linux
[14:32:20] <mvita> ahh, 11793 was on my list and I couldn't get to it
[14:33:34] <wiesand> the "modulo linux" means effectively we won’t ;-)
[14:33:36] <meffie> tom commented on 11793
[14:33:51] <mvita> yes, he was best qualified to look at that one anyway
[14:34:04] <Jeffrey Altman> gm.
[14:34:15] <wiesand> good morning
[14:34:20] <mvita> hello Jeffrey
[14:34:41] <wiesand> Mark: yes, but unless I screwed up when I tried last week, it still needs a noontrivial rebase
[14:34:53] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl93AC7D46> I guess I also failed to mention my fileserver auto-tuning draft last
time, since it hadn't built on all platforms then.
[14:35:18] <mvita> weisand - I will do it.
[14:36:16] <Jeffrey Altman> to correct a misstatement from earlier.  the reason that 1.4.x continued for so long after the release of 1.6 was not because 1.6 had problems.  It was for two other reasons.  First, Linux distributions that package OpenAFS at 1.4 would not have replaced their builds with 1.6 due to their own release cycles.  Second, large commercial support customers were running 1.4 and could not move to 1.6 for 12 to 18 months no matter what.
[14:36:21] <mvita> tkeiser said he would > write a follow-on commit that refactors all of this to be simpler.
[14:37:01] <wiesand> ah
[14:37:29] <mvita> but I will still rebase this one, since we don't know when Thomas will be able to do that
[14:41:43] <mvita> gah, sorry, I'm mixing up 11793 and 12262
[14:41:50] <mvita> I will rebase 11793
[14:42:00] <wiesand> Thanks.
[14:42:27] <wiesand> I seem to be to tired to understand 11629
[14:42:53] <wiesand> where’s usemem set?
[14:43:09] <mvita> looking at 11629
[14:44:34] <mvita> love the help text on -S and -L
[14:46:03] <mvita> usemem is set here:   cmd_OptionAsInt(opts, OPT_svnodes, &useMem);
[14:46:09] <mvita> line 1144
[14:46:24] <meffie> +1 just for the help text
[14:46:31] <mvita> agreed
[14:47:22] <wiesand> Ah, thanks. Is that really KB units?
[14:48:17] <wiesand> +1 on the help texts
[14:49:55] <wiesand> Yes, KB. The <750, <1100, <1500 just looked ridiculous.
[14:53:46] <wiesand> Ben: on your question about old linux kernels... I don’t think 1.8 has to support whatever is in use today.
[14:54:32] <mvita> gah, firefox page search not working w/ gerrit
[14:54:33] <wiesand> It should support the currently latest  RHEL, that would make it 3.10
[14:55:23] <mvita> and now suddenly it is working
[15:00:30] <wiesand> I’m running out of time. Is there more to discuss today?
[15:01:58] <meffie> i dont have anything more.
[15:03:08] <wiesand> Ok, let’s adjourn. Thanks everyone.
[15:03:35] <meffie> thank you.
[15:04:02] meffie leaves the room
[15:04:08] <wiesand> cu next week
[15:04:10] wiesand leaves the room
[23:13:17] Jeffrey Altman leaves the room
[23:19:29] Jeffrey Altman joins the room
