[14:00:25] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> Greetings!
[14:00:30] <mvita> mike and I will join momentarily
[14:00:35] <mvita> just finishing our call
[14:00:56] <wiesand> Hi Daria. Hope You’re not (too) upset about what I said on foundation-discuss.
[14:01:05] <wiesand> Hell Ben (+ Mark, Mike)
[14:01:47] <meffie> hello
[14:02:03] <wiesand> Good, let’s start.
[14:02:04] <Daria> i'm not upset
[14:02:12] <wiesand> Daria: :)
[14:02:15] <Daria> it's pretty clear there is a lack of general understanding
[14:02:24] <Daria> i did what i could to clear it up
[14:02:42] <wiesand> Yes, thanks.
[14:02:49] <mvita> completely here now.
[14:03:15] <wiesand> Ben: Kudos for looking into Linux 4.5!
[14:03:35] <wiesand> That’s at at least a point to start.
[14:03:51] <wiesand> Any other news/insights on the linux kernel issues?
[14:04:15] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> Yeah, it seemed like a logical place to start.
[14:07:31] <wiesand> Ok, no further news on linux. On to 1.6.18.
[14:07:37] <meffie> would a new buildbot to do nightlies of openafs master builds on leading edge linux help?
[14:08:20] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> Maybe ... but it also might give a false sense of security, in the
absence of a comprehensive automated test suite.
[14:08:29] <wiesand> To some extent, sure.
[14:08:36] <wiesand> But +1 on Ben’s remark.
[14:09:01] <meffie> as long and we understand it to be just checking for build breakage?
[14:09:41] <wiesand> It will bail out at the first error.
[14:09:56] <meffie> true.
[14:10:20] <wiesand> So we’d get what the first user would report, just a bit earlier.
[14:10:38] <mvita> yes, and then a developer could investigate the rest
[14:11:01] <mvita> I'm also following linux-fsdevel now
[14:11:06] <mvita> (mailing list)
[14:11:26] <mvita> slowly getting up to speed
[14:11:33] <wiesand> Good news.
[14:11:51] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> thanks for taking that on!
[14:12:00] <mvita> np
[14:12:18] <wiesand> So there’s some hope.
[14:12:28] <mvita> there's always hope!
[14:12:53] <wiesand> We could place bets on how long it will take Ubuntu to backport something breaking us into the 16.04 LTS kernel.
[14:13:59] <mvita> which kernel version is that using?
[14:14:00] <wiesand> Mark: If we just hope much longer it won’t matter any more.
[14:14:09] <wiesand> 4.4 + some patches
[14:14:40] <mvita> my definition of hope excludes the "just hope" idea, so yes, I agree
[14:14:54] <wiesand> But note they backported the ERESTARTSYS change from 4.4 into the 14.04 LTS kernel (3.13)
[14:15:22] <mvita> ah, interesting
[14:15:48] <wiesand> SO, something like this is probably bound to happen again. The question is when.
[14:16:03] <mvita> I still think there's more that can be done in 4.4 but I'm not there yet.
[14:16:34] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> The ERESTARTSYS thing was "make sendfile interruptable", recall; it
was not seen as a disruptive change by the authors.
[14:16:39] <wiesand> Well, for 4.4 we at least have a client that works (as usual) at all.
[14:17:15] <wiesand> Well it sure was disruptive to us ;-) And it was not a security fix either.
[14:18:20] <mvita> by setting up the builder and keeping closer tabs on future linux filesystem changes, we should be much more proactive on discovering stuff early
[14:18:37] <wiesand> So providing Ubuntu LTS systems with an AFS client is not sustainable at the moment. Which is quite a dilemma here right now.
[14:18:56] <mvita> ?
[14:19:20] <mvita> oh, you mean sustainable going forward, even though it's working now.
[14:19:44] <wiesand> Right. I may have to choose between the AFS client and the next security update for the kernel anytime.
[14:20:22] <wiesand> So I can’t provide that to my users, though it’s what they want :-(
[14:21:22] <wiesand> Enough whining on my part ;-)
[14:21:38] <mvita> we are working on several fronts to reduce the exposure we have on linux kernel changes, so it's not perfect yet but we are moving in the right direction.
[14:22:00] <mvita> "we" = openafs community
[14:22:18] <wiesand> Good. With 1.6.18 we at least have a release that works with 12.04 and 16.04 right now.
[14:22:41] <wiesand> Speaking of which: Should we release it soon, or wait for more test results? Mike?
[14:23:25] <meffie> i've gotten nothing but success reports for the sites that reported back to me.
[14:24:02] <meffie> about 5 sites, of different kinds (commercial, university, research)
[14:24:02] <wiesand> Do you expect any more reports soon? Or some from sites we wouldn’t want to miss?
[14:24:08] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> "Ship it!"
[14:24:09] <mvita> and SNA runs it in production (but our cell is not large)
[14:24:31] <wiesand> I think Ben’s right.
[14:24:33] <meffie> yes, we are running it too. no issues found.
[14:24:55] <wiesand> Sp, merge 12261 and release?
[14:25:07] <mvita> I'm okay with that.
[14:26:44] <meffie> +1
[14:27:38] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> Unfortunately, I have a video call in 2 minutes.
[14:27:52] <mvita> oh, 1.8-ness
[14:28:08] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> But people who own changes named in my mail, should feel encouraged to
submit new versions
[14:28:18] <meffie> thanks for merging the log rotate patches.
[14:28:32] <wiesand> So, one remark: Do we need 12240 or similar pre-branch too?
[14:28:47] <wiesand> I guess we want it pre-release
[14:29:10] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> Yes, we need 12240 pre-branch, IMO
[14:29:20] <meffie> yes
[14:29:29] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> (But it wasn't -1'd, so it was not under consideration for what I was
doing that generated the mail.)
[14:31:12] <wiesand> [merged 12261]
[14:31:13] <meffie> i'll review the list, thank.
[14:31:15] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> Any updates on akeyconvert testing?  I'm somewhat inclined to just
merge it...
[14:31:43] <wiesand> Last thing I read from Mike was "it works" ?
[14:31:52] <meffie> i could test it again if you want :)
[14:32:06] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> Maybe I meant review...
[14:33:06] <meffie> maybe we could talk mvita into doing a review?
[14:33:21] <mvita> yes, you probably could - I'll ask him.
[14:33:34] <mvita> he says okay.
[14:33:49] <meffie> tell him thanks in advance!
[14:34:01] <mvita> I will when I see him again.
[14:34:29] <wiesand> I intend to pick up sending minutes again. Maybe it helps a bit. Feel free to respond if anything in them needs clarification or correction. The lists aren’t exactly busy these days.
[14:34:44] <wiesand> "Thanks in advance!"
[14:35:21] <kadukoafs@gmail.com/barnowl5B83EB95> Thanks; it will feel nice to have minutes
[14:36:43] <mvita> number for the asetkey change?
[14:37:08] <wiesand> 11786
[14:37:47] <mvita> oh, that's why I couldn't find it - it's not asetkey, it's akeyconvert
[14:39:19] <mvita> I plan to test & review that this afternoon.
[14:40:06] <wiesand> Ok. For 1.6.18, I’ll send mail to release-team when the homework is done. Just like for pre1, I think that worked fine.
[14:40:45] <wiesand> Anything else to discuss today?
[14:41:12] <mvita> nothing comes to mind
[14:41:37] <wiesand> So, thanks a lot for being here today, and all the momentum during the past days!
[14:42:34] <wiesand> Bye.
[14:42:34] wiesand leaves the room
[15:19:54] meffie leaves the room
