[19:19:11] <Jeffrey Altman> Mike, what does rxtraceroute do?   I'm quite confused by what it is supposed to measure.
[19:21:00] <meffie> its like traceroute, but sends rx version packets, so can measure the path rx packets take
[19:21:02] <Jeffrey Altman> the reason that traceroute is called traceroute is because it limits the number of router hops across which an IP packet can be forwarded
[19:21:37] <meffie> sorry, some here for me..
[19:22:08] <Jeffrey Altman> how does increasing the TTL for an rx version packet measure the router path?
[19:22:47] <ballbery> ???
[19:22:57] <ballbery> you do know the details of how traceroute in general works?
[19:23:17] <ballbery> send packets starting with a ttl of 1, look for the ICMP error return and see where it came from
[19:23:26] <ballbery> increment TTL on each try
[19:24:25] <ballbery> in theory (provided routers respond properly, nothing is blocking ICMP, and the route isn't flapping, etc.) you end up with a chain of routers between you and the destination
[19:26:28] ballbery has not actually looked at the code yet but that question did not make a lot of sense...
[19:29:21] <meffie> it inscreases the number of IP_TTLs (hops)
[19:29:31] <Jeffrey Altman> There is the RX timeout (or TTL) which is not going to have anything to do with the behavior of IP packets on routers.   The commit message and the variable name implies the RX Timeout
[19:31:46] <meffie> oh, sorry, yes, i should have said IP_TTL.
[19:34:26] <Jeffrey Altman> that makes more sense.   thank you.
[19:35:25] <Jeffrey Altman> the copyright dates are 2012 and 2013.   are those correct?
[19:35:36] <meffie> you are welcome. i can update the commit message to make it more clear. i assume people will have suggestions for the man pages too.
[19:35:53] <meffie> yes, this was done a long time ago, we
[19:36:19] <meffie> we've found it useful, so wanted to make it more widely available.
[19:42:41] <Jeffrey Altman> thank you for that.
